Opal
Opal is considered a relatively soft stone. Known for its array of colours known as opalescence, there are a wide range of colour variations such as white, black, crystal, fure, boulder, matrix, jelly, harlequin, pinfire and rolling flash.
Opal is composed of hydrated silica, and it belongs to the mineraloid group rather than the mineral family. It may have various inclusions, including cracks, impurities, and host rock matrix, affecting clarity and appearance. Opal doesn't have a distinct directional growth like crystals. It forms in voids of silica-rich solutions, creating its characteristic play-of-colour patterns through light interaction.
Opal is one of the two birthstones for the month of October, alongside tourmaline. Its captivating colours symbolise hope, purity, and creativity.
